The Ancient Atlas

PatternsNo. 02 · Precision

Tolerances you would ask a machine shop for.

Joints you cannot slide paper into. Surfaces flat to a fraction of a millimetre, corners cut square in granite, and the tolerance holds across whole buildings rather than one showpiece block.

What the pattern is, and what it is not: the argument in full

Precision is measurable, which makes it the most testable thing in the Atlas. A flat face is either flat or it isn't. A joint either takes a feeler gauge or it doesn't. That is why it belongs in a comparative view: the question is not whether one wall is impressive, it is whether the same tolerance turns up in places with no contact.

What a video cannot give you is the number. Treat these as a survey of where to look, not as evidence of a figure.
