Second-largest city of the Nabataean Empire (after Petra), in AlUla, Saudi Arabia. 131 monumental tombs carved directly into sandstone mountains, c. 1st century BCE - 1st century CE. The tombs are carved top-down from the mountain face — unfinished examples reveal the work sequence clearly. Greco-Roman stylistic elements appear deep in Arabian territory. Interior chambers are remarkably plain despite the elaborate exterior facades, a puzzle that conventional and independent readings interpret differently. Critical anchor for Library Entry 04 (the Top-Down Tradition).
