Top-down rock-cut Buddhist stupa carved from a single bedrock outcrop in Samangan Province, northern Afghanistan. The stupa is excavated into the surrounding rock rather than built up — the entire complex (stupa, surrounding monastery cells, courtyard) was sculpted by removing material. Same top-down technique visible at Kailasa (India), Dharmrajeshwar (India), and the Lalibela churches (Ethiopia).
