Fortified pre-Columbian city on a hilltop in Morelos, Mexico, dominated by the Pyramid of the Plumed Serpent — covered on all four sides with precision-cut bas-relief Quetzalcoatl iconography in the same iconographic tradition that runs from Teotihuacan to Chichén Itzá. Xochicalco also preserves an underground observatory with a vertical light shaft that tracks the sun's zenith passages on May 14/15 and July 28/29. Conventional dating c. 650-900 CE, but the precision of the stonework and the astronomical engineering are consistent with the broader Mesoamerican megalithic tradition Hugh Newman documents across the region.
