Vilcabamba (Espíritu Pampa)

Last stronghold of the Inca Empire after the Spanish conquest, deep in the Vilcabamba mountains northeast of Cusco. Rediscovered by Hiram Bingham in 1911 and definitively identified in 1964 by Gene Savoy. Shows the same stratigraphic pattern visible at Machu Picchu and Sacsayhuamán: older, more refined polygonal masonry at the base, with cruder Inca-era stonework added on top. This 'old work / new work' contrast is one of the strongest visual arguments for a pre-Inca megalithic tradition that the Incas inherited rather than built.
