Oiniades

City / RuinsEuropeGreecec. 450 BCEAcarnanian Greek

Marsh-girt hill city on the lower Acheloos with a 5.5 km circuit regarded as one of the finest displays of polygonal masonry in Greece — tightly jointed curvilinear limestone following the crag line, its gates roofed with corbelled and true voussoir arches, among the earliest Greek arch construction. The naval installation preserves rock-cut shipsheds with colonnaded slipways rising from the silted ancient harbour.
