Superbly preserved Hellenistic city on Mt. Arakynthos above Missolonghi, founded c. 230 BCE after Macedon destroyed Old Pleuron: a 2.4 km rectangular circuit with 31 towers and 7 gates in large drafted limestone blocks, standing in places to full curtain height. Inside are a theatre built against the city wall, a 62 m stoa, and a monumental five-basin communal cistern.
