Zendan-e Soleyman (Tomb of Cambyses I?)

Square tower at Pasargadae, one kilometre from the Tomb of Cyrus and of nearly identical design to the Cube of Zoroaster 37 km southwest at Naqsh-e Rustam. Substantially ruined; one wall and part of a second stand. Local tradition associates it with Cambyses I; other readings propose a fire temple or sacred archive. The two towers are one architectural type, and this is generally judged the earlier of the pair for a specific reason: its blocks were set without the iron cramps used at the Ka'bah. The fastener carries the chronology, not the style. Not to be confused with the Zendan-e Soleyman beside Takht-e Soleyman in West Azerbaijan, 901 km northwest, which is a natural crater cone.
