Via Cava di San Sebastiano
Rock-CutEuropeItalyc. 500 BCEEtruscan
One of the deepest of the Etruscan vie cave of the Sorano-Pitigliano tuff plateau: a narrow sunken road hand-cut into volcanic tuff with sheer walls rising 20-25 m above the roadbed, running beside a rock-cut necropolis. The function of the hollow ways — transport, drainage, defense, or processional — remains genuinely debated.
