City / RuinsEuropeItalyc. 800 BCEEtruscan (Villanovan origins)
Protohistoric and Etruscan centre on a promontory above Lake Bolsena whose Iron Age settlement covered up to 100 hectares, famed for Villanovan bronze work. The most visible remain is the cliff-cut 'colombario' with some 900 niches over the lake; the site's abrupt decline after 500 BCE is the focus of the international Bisenzio Project.
