Temple of Isis (Fondi)

Terraced complex on Colle delle Monache above Fondi in southern Lazio, now occupied by Villa Placitelli. A dry-laid polygonal limestone terrace of roughly 64 by 79 m survives up to 4.5 m high, with four barrel-vaulted underground cisterns and the remains of a three-apsed building; in the plain below beside the Via Appia runs the 153 m reticulate Muro Varroniano. Construction technique places it in the late Republican period. Nineteenth and twentieth century scholars proposed it as a sanctuary of Isis on the strength of sculptural finds, an attribution the regional park itself records as lacking definitive confirmation. Same limestone massif, and the same polygonal tradition, as Norba and Alatri.
