Siphai (Tipha)

Fortified harbour town of the Boeotian coast — mythical home of Tiphys, pilot of the Argo — whose late-4th-century BC ashlar circuit follows a rocky spine down into the Corinthian Gulf, leaving wall footings and a monumental building partly submerged. Two gates flanked by artillery towers survive, and traces of a protective sea mole lie in the anchorage; the underwater works have never been investigated.
