Open-air assembly ground in Athens where the citizens of the ancient democracy met to vote on civic matters from the 6th century BCE onward. Features a monumental rock-cut bema (speaker's platform), massive cyclopean retaining walls, and a carved auditorium oriented to seat several thousand citizens. The architectural ambition exceeds what the conventional Cleisthenes-era democracy is generally credited with.
