The finest of Sardinia's nuraghi: a basalt keep 15.5 m across, preserved to 17.5 m (originally ~23 m), with three superimposed corbel-vaulted tholos chambers linked by a helical stone staircase, enclosed in a triangular bastion with corner towers and loopholed corridors. Whether the great nuraghi were fortresses, chiefly residences or ceremonial centres is still debated, and claimed solstitial alignments remain contested — the hardness and regularity of the basalt coursework stands out either way.
