Necker Island Megalithic Site

Small remote island in the Northwest Hawaiian Islands, 250 km from Kauai, with 33 documented stone shrines (heiau) on its ridge — far more per square kilometer than anywhere in the main Hawaiian chain. The island has no fresh water and minimal soil; the question of who built and used these structures, and why, remains an open archaeological puzzle. Some readings invoke a pre-Polynesian (Menehune or other) substrate, with later Polynesian use built atop.
