Small fortified acropolis on a coastal lava dome of the volcanic Methana peninsula, its walls built of local andesite and dacite in rough megalithic style, first raised in Mycenaean times and rebuilt into the Byzantine era. The ancient town of Methana spreads around its foot, with the sanctuaries of Isis and Hermes recorded by Pausanias nearby.
