Dodona
TempleEuropeGreecec. 800 BCEEpirote Greek
Reputedly the oldest Hellenic oracle, centred on the sacred oak of Zeus below Mt. Tomaros, with cult activity from the Late Bronze Age and over 4,200 inscribed oracular lead tablets recovered. The great Hellenistic theatre built under Pyrrhus (~17,000 seats) is among the largest in Greece; a fortified acropolis of coursed trapezoidal-polygonal limestone crowns the sanctuary. How the divination actually worked — rustling oak leaves, resonating bronze cauldrons, or doves and priestesses — is still debated.
