Cassope

A complete Hippodamian grid city on a high terrace under the Zalongo cliffs overlooking the Ambracian Gulf, founded in the mid-4th century BC as capital of the Kassopaians. Its fortifications and terrace works are laid in polygonal and trapezoidal grey limestone; the theatre, odeion, prytaneion and a 180-room hostel survive. Abandoned in 31 BC when Rome moved the population to Nikopolis.
