Seven-towered fortress in Istanbul, built by Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II in 1458 incorporating earlier Byzantine Theodosian walls and the Golden Gate (Porta Aurea) — a 5th-century triumphal arch that was the ceremonial entrance to Byzantine Constantinople. The fortress served as a treasury, prison, and execution site. The Golden Gate and the Theodosian walls remain visible within the structure.
