Maya city in western Belize. El Castillo pyramid is 40 m tall, with elaborate stucco friezes wrapping the upper levels depicting the Maya cosmos. Active Late Classic period (600-900 CE). Local folklore associates the site with a 'stone maiden' ghost — 'Xunantunich' means 'Stone Maiden' in Yucatec Maya.
