Syedra

Hilltop city above the Mediterranean between Alanya and Gazipasa, settled in the 7th century BCE and abandoned in the 13th century CE, its upper town 400 m above its own harbour. Excavated only since 1994 under Ismail Karamut; a 2011 underwater survey found remains of the port. Much of the hill is still buried. The interest here is stratigraphic rather than megalithic: the standing walls are a late rebuild assembled out of the rubble of the earlier city, with column drums, inscribed blocks and broken pottery set into the masonry as ordinary fill - a legible case of a site quarried by its own successors.
