Lato

City / RuinsEuropeGreecec. 500 BCEDorian Cretan

One of Crete's best-preserved Classical stone cities, saddled between twin acropolis peaks above Mirabello Bay. Its stepped agora, prytaneion, temple and terraced houses are built of large roughly dressed limestone blocks in massive polygonal-to-trapezoidal drystone style on cyclopean-looking terrace walls; the settlement is thought to predate the Dorian arrival.
