Harput Castle

City / RuinsTürkiye

Ancient hilltop fortress in Elazığ Province, eastern Türkiye, with occupation phases spanning Hittite, Urartian, Roman, Byzantine, Artuqid, Mongol, and Ottoman periods. Recent excavations have revealed underground chambers and tunnels beneath the visible castle structure. The Urartian foundation phase (~9th-7th c. BCE) is the oldest documented, but the bedrock foundations may predate that. The 'secret beneath Harput Castle' refers to ongoing discoveries in the lower levels.
