Terraced andesite hill in West Java. Seismic tomography and ground-penetrating radar imaged structures beneath the visible megalithic terraces, and a 2023 paper read them as construction beginning around 25,000 BCE. Archaeological Prospection retracted that paper in March 2024, finding its radiocarbon dates came from soil not associated with anything demonstrably man-made. The authors dispute the retraction. Carbon dates carbon; what it belonged to is the open question.
