Falasarna
City / RuinsEuropeGreecec. 500 BCEGreek (Cretan maritime city-state)
The best-preserved ancient closed war harbour in Crete: an artificial basin ringed by cut-stone quays with mooring bollards still bearing rope marks, linked to the sea by chain-closable channels and guarded by dressed-stone towers. Tectonic uplift of ~6.5 m — most scholars blame the great AD 365 earthquake — left the entire harbour stranded 100 m inland, a stone throne possibly of Astarte beside it.
