One of the best-preserved fortresses of ancient Greece, guarding the Kaza pass between Attica and Boeotia: an 860 m circuit of superb coursed trapezoidal ashlar averaging 2.6 m thick, with six towers still standing 4-6 m high along the north side. Excavation identified an earlier polygonal-masonry phase beneath the Classical walls, and whether Athens or Boeotia built the fort is still argued.
