15th-century Hindu pyramid temple on the western slope of Mount Lawu in Central Java, Indonesia. The truncated pyramid structure is stylistically unlike any other Javanese temple and bears striking resemblance to Mesoamerican step pyramids (Yucatán, Tikal). Reliefs depict the Sudamala legend and include unusual iconography of metalworking, fertility, and what appears to be advanced surveying instruments. Conventionally dated to the late Majapahit period but the underlying foundation may be substantially older.
